Ideology 4 me

Image
How do I feel about this IdEoLoGy? I feel good! my numbers were 13 for A, 12 for B, and 11 for C so all of them were really close so I believe that makes me a very balanced person as no number was way off from another. I believe this is great because it allows me to see youth though everyone's eyes and to see every viewpoint. When I write this I think about parenting and how every parent has a different style and how they raise their children. None of the ways are wrong. Just different and that is what makes this work interesting. The catalog I got the lowest number in was Critical Youth Development. If I had to pick one category, I do believe this is the group I lean to after reading the horoscope facts. The one sentence that really stood out to me from this group was "how can adults and youth work together to negotiate..." I LOVE this sentence because as adults we have to work as adults to understand youth. They are not adults yet, they do not have to under

Lincoln After School

Image
Friday October  13th 2017, Today I went to the Lincoln school in Providence with my YDEV 352 class.  We got to see their after school program first hand. My first impressions were that you would have never known you were in providence if  it wasn't for the address. We were surrounded by brand new toys. A playground that wasn't rusty and worked. There was also grass and trees growing all around the surrounding areas.  Inside the building was clean and organized. Each child had their own designated space.  Today, select children had yoga and that was an expectancy in its own. They all followed along but what I liked most was if they made a mistake the teacher did not call the student out, she just kept going on to the next move. This was awesome because it allowed them to get their bodies movie after sitting in a classroom all day but it doesn't make them feel over whelmed by "getting the move wrong". The children laughed and enjoyed themselves.  Although there

Parkinson Awareness and Crafts September 23rd

As an event I went to the Elks Lodge in South Kingstown on September 23rd to help raise money for Parkinson Disease. It was hosted by the Elks and by the South County YMCA, which I also work for. I actually got paid to attend this event and to help set up children's events.  We had a blow up soccer field where there were sides so the ball would not go too far. This was self fun. We had a small bounce house where two children were allowed at once and a craft table. That is where I spent most of my time. We made spinners to hang in trees out of paper plates and decorated them with dot pant (bingo markers). We also made puppets out of sandwich bags and paper plates.  We had tape, markers, crayons and scissors for the children to craft with. One factor that made crafting hard was the element of being outside and the wind. The paper would blow away unless a heavy object, like a rock was on it.  The children favorite aspect of the day was the magician that came. He really drew they chi

Daycare Makes my Blood Boil For Justice

INJUSTICE IN MY LIFE! For me this was the first thing that popped into my head. I worked at an "unnamed" [confidentiality] daycare for over a year and a half of my young life.  For six of those months, the last six months before I quit I was a lead teacher for ages 18-24 months making 10.30 a hour. That was after asking for two raises and reviews. They were never just given. MY INJUSTICE:  I soon found out on two separate occasions that new staff were coming in with no training or certifications as teacher assistants starting at 10.50 while I was making 10.30 to be a lead teacher.  I had been here for a long period of time and I had taken training to be a lead so I was not sure how this was possible. WHAT I DID: I asked the manager the first time I found out. This is when I was still making 9.80 an hour. She told me this was not true and gave me a 50 cent raise. stating that was the best she could do and that I was not making the most beside one other person

Teachers Care 4 Students

Care for Children                          The Reading: I found this article very interesting because it is something I have never read before. Plus it is from our lovely teacher (: I also believe this is an interesting article because I have grown up in Rhode Island and only known Rhode Island ways so it is awesome to see how other states do things.  I really liked the idea of the teachers drawing artwork to express themselves. I think this is something done well. For example, Eli's Teacher map really stood out to me because I can connect to it as an educator but as a student I can also understand it very easily.  Uniforms are really important as we have to dress a certain way. For example, at my internship, if I do not wear my t-shirt I will get written up, but the trust is the kids do not care if I am wearing a bright orange t-shirt so who is it i am wearing the shirt for? Eli's image showed he cared for the students by watching his tone and showing he

"Leading with" Youth In Action

Image
Youth in Action leads by letting the Youth lead. The youth our the future. How can we make changes if we don't know the current situations? Sure we can hear stories but we are not living it. YIA teams up with its youth to hear about the issues they are dealing with daily so they can address them and create workshops to help create a better environment. Basically, YIA makes sure youth are involved every step of the way and that is how they lead.

Why I YDEV!

I was pushed.. for so long I had people informing me about the youth development program. Probably, since my arrival at RIC.  I didn't want to hear them. I didn't know what youth development was and it did not sound interesting. Development? I have to know what stages youth go though WHAT?!?! I Started Teaching.. When I started teaching at a daycare I was shocked at all the standards that even 3 month old have to meet. Why do we have standards for thee year old? Why are we documenting their strengths and weaknesses? Why do they have a writing domain?  Holding a toy the wrong way means they wont be able to write?  Why does every bumble bee craft in the four year old room have to look exactly the same? cant some have two heads? Some have 4 wings?  Why cant the children learn though their own creative minds. Why do they have to learn and complete activities exactly how the teacher has them planned.    Documenting Felt Wrong..   Why  is little Timmy getting a two

I have worked with youth in FIVE different settings: 1) Daycare - This is the first job I had that was paid to work with youth. I got to experience working with all ages while at this center but I soon found a room that I fit into which was ages one and a half to two years old. I was shocked to find out this is where I would fit in as I have always thought it would be the older kids I would have a connection to. Here I had to make curriculum biased off the RIELDS. Every month we had a theme and the children learned to help me set up activities. I learned their likes and dislikes and planned activities around that to help them grow as little humans. Play was used in each center. Like the children in the article , the children here too practiced dramatic play. 2) Public classroom - The time I got to work in this classroom was in a providence public school. I was in a third grade classroom where I worked with all the students for 4 weeks before they assigned me to one stud

Image
3 Stereotypes of Youth:  They (youth) Can not be trusted  "Youth are to be feared, controlled, contained, and as Nathan noted, "Kept in." (Steinberg 269). "Young people are self- indulgent and uninvested in more sophisticated "adult" concerns" (Bogad).  Why we believe them: Media -magazines, television, music, movies, etc.  They tell  stories on how teens are believed to act Old Traditions -  older generations telling how youth act.  Believe in "motions" youth have to go though  "We believe we know youth- we once were youth" (Bogad). "Psychological and biological assumptions" (Bogad). - this is youth having to act a certain "because they are youth" Things that have been thought.  My Memory: As a youth I was often not considered an equal by an adult.  An example that stands out to me is when I was 18  and working at Kohl's my senior year of high school.  While I was inside wo

Image
What are the SEVEN                       Characteristics of Youth Work ? 1) Education -   Theses are when methods of play and activities are used "it stimulate informal education and learning (page 2). 2) Social -   This is finding activities and things that youth can relate to. Places they want to show up to. Thus they do not feel forced to be here. " young people themselves generally associate with their peer groups and  this provides a useful starting pint for engaging with them" (page 3). 3) Challenges inequality (involvement) -   This is getting a community to come together. We are all one and want to support each other.  Instead of differences tearing us apart, create activities that untie us together. " seek to address power imbalances rather than merely say or do the right things to avoids unlawful discrimination" (page 3). 4) Strengthens youth voices/ Influence -   Today's youth have many options and want to express them but
